Why I'm Voting Democrat

I think the Republican Party is the proper heir to American liberal (small L) thought. If its foreign policy weren't conducted by blundering fools and showmen like our current administration, and if its leaders recognized the futility of religion in politics, it could be said to have "come into its own" in an internationalist community. We are fighting for secularism in Iraq and Afghanistan whether Jerry Falwell knows it or not.

As it stands, the party of Lincoln has been subverted by people who - unlike Mr. Lincoln - coddle religious fundamentalists and prefer seedy appeals to religion over robust leadership. The current GOP are no allies of mine. The alternative is a tepid Democratic Party which compulsively rejects international solidarity. They're the party I'm prepared to support in next Tuesday's Congressional election - not because they have it together, but because I want Republicans to spend at least two years marinating in guilt about becoming mouthpieces for incompetents and religious nihilists. Maybe they might even get it together in that time and pledge to "kick Jerry Falwell in the ass," as Barry Goldwater (representative of a bygone Republican era) once declared. Until that happens, John Edwards, that most dynamic of the moderate pro-war Democrats, has my endorsement for President in 2008.

The Republican party needs to go back to its historical roots. It also needs a serious change in its foreign policy. I'm hoping that Senator Chuck Hagel will be their nominee for President in 2008 as he is just the man to do that.
